Lunchtime Kudos

As promised, my pal Dodgy Trev, took me back to his gaff for an early lunch of cheese on toast and to play PGR3 on his nice new spanky Xbox 360. He plays it on some dodgy "no-name, no-brand" 28 inch widescreen TV, so the game was not running at it's HDTV best (or anywhere near it) but I have to say, I was impressed. Driving games are not really my forte but this game just looks so good! The detail in the cars, buildings and surroundings is so realistic and flows perfectly with no pop-up at all. I get the impression that this is a game where you could easily get lost in the "realism" of it all. As I was racing "downtown" in New York, a portion of the track takes you onto a bridge which just looked real as it whizzed past me! I was really really impressed. Mum.... I know what I want for christmas.... I also tried to break it by pressing the Xbox button on the wireless controller when the game was loading a new track but it quite happily showed me part of the dashboard where I could see what my (Trev's) mates were up to on XBox Live and I could change my music prefs. We tried to get the 360 hooked up to some MP3s on his PC using the Media Connect software but this did not seem to work. The PC could see the 360, but not the other way round. Odd. But I have seen some posts over at XBox-Scene where other people have had this issue too. We then fired up Halo2 which looked crisper and more detailed than ever. The backwards compatibility worked a treat! Come on Halo3, bring it on!

Being a bit of a racing game buff, I think you will like it.

It's also really clever. when you are playing single player, as you have signed into Live when you power on the console it checks the race you just played and shows you your global ranking!

Only 865th in league 25 then... oh well...

We never got to play online but that looks like fun too. I have played online on the original PGR.

We (BigFootCookie and I) went an saw Cameo playing in Brum yesterday and had a little play.

The TV they were using is obviously a HDTV as the graphics looked pretty amazing! The textures etc were all really good. The game seemed total crap though!

And I suppose It does look better on a PC - but when the 360 costs less than the newest PC Graphics card.... who can argue with that.

PC games will always have "the edge" but the consoles are catching up quick. Its all about accessibility and being able to just boot the thing up, whack in the game and play. Without having to worry about your hard disk thrashing away trying to download your antivirus stuff at the same time and some annoying twat on MSN messenger popping up in mid game.

Then again, I might just be thinking of my bad experiences of PC gaming which on the whole is good. But I would rather shell out £400 on a console and some games than over £1000 on a gaming PC that needs to have hardware updates as the games evolve.

/taoski sits and waits for the PC Gaming fanboi backlash..

I agree that you cannot beat a PC for FPS gaming. I have played Halo2 online on the XBox and using the controller, it's like playing with blinkers on.

A totally different experience - although you do get used to it.

I think Mr SwimPig is also after a 360 too - so soon we can all race together! W00t!
