Torrents and Tribulations

At the bequest (not final!!) of DJ Scratch-Master Rob "the winnebago on the wheels of steel" Smith i am making a posting about my current P2P situation, whats hot, whats not and whats a pile of... er... snot! Enough about iPods... cut to the chase: Not much has changed really since i made my last posting about what i use. Sites have come and gone faster than i can remember and only the brave have stood the test of the MPAA and their vulture legal teams. Major players have fallen and new ones have stepped in to take their place. Still the torrent sites go on strong as before and the signs are that it is not slowing down. After all - if you featured something like torrents on places like the BBC news website - would you not expect more people to start using it? Duh! In my world, P2P apps have pretty much died a death and i only use them for obtaining an odd track now and again (obviously ones i already legally own). Sites like Suprnova paved the way for torrents to take over and this is now seen as (one of) the best methods of obtaining "stuff". Here is my current A-list of sites and software. Torrent Sites: These are the only torrent sites i use now. All the others like Torrentspy and Sharelive seem to have gone a bit "odd". Plus, using sites that you have to register for and enforce an upload/download ratio means you get more people sharing and therefore get a faster download! Oink is a great music only site which uses an invite only entry system and this can only be done by "Power Users". I got an invite - not sure how you would go about getting one! Mininova is registration free and is fast to load which i why i like it, just like the good old days of Suprnova. Demonoid is the best though and has a good community feel to it. P2P: Soulseek is a music only sharing app which benefits from allowing you to find a song and download the "containing folder" which means you could in theory get a whole album in 1 click! You can browse and download from other peoples shares too. Soulseek has a chat facility where you can make requests plus an excellent watchlist tool which pops up and tells you when people sign on with matching criteria. Looking for the Drum and Bass version of Button Moon? It'll tell you when it's available! Warez is your typical run-of-the-mill P2P application like Kazaa, Limewire, MinMX and a host of others. The only thing that keeps me using this is that it does seem very fast! Not too many users though and its probably monitored by someone. I have had a few fakes from there too which was annoying. I might switch back to WinMX soon but i use it so infrequently that it hardly seems worth it. Browsing the candy store of torrent sites makes more sense to me - unless you know exactly what you are looking for. Essential Software: Symantec anti-virus - nuff said. Corp version does not expire - need i say any more? Does what it says on the tin. Giant Antispyware has since been bought by our matey big bad Bill Gates - so it must be good! It runs all the time and pops up to tell you when dodgy things are happenning. Another essential is Reg mechanic which will clear out the rubbish from your registry - maybe making your machine faster and more stable. Ditch Internet Explorer and use Firefox. Since i made the switch i have had alot less spyware on my PC. Its fast and free! Get it now! In conclusion, P2P is out, Torrents are on the up and i still have'nt got an iPod! Oops! Sorry!

Revelations

Just got round to watching the Star Wars Revelations "film-ette" which i grabbed off the Torrents a few weeks back. Basically the film has been made by Star Wars fans and contains their own characters and plotlines within the Star Wars universe. Our chum Lord Vader makes an appearance too and manages to choke a man using the force (never seen that done before!) and there are plenty of Stormtroopers and Jedi thrown in too. You might expect that this would be total crap. But it is'nt! Even the special effects are good! A space battle between the Jedi and some Tie Fighters is excellently done and would looks better than the effects in the early series of Babylon 5! Lightsaber battles galore between "the baddies and the goodies" are also well done, if a little choreographed. All in all - very impressive. Although fat, beared or goatee wearing Jedi so look a little out of place. Download the full film from the Star Wars Revelations Website.

I find your lack of Faith disturbing....

MP3 Blogs

Just spent the last 3 hours perusing the wares over at the MP3Blogs Aggregator. If you are prepared to wade through the list of sites on the right you will find an enourmous wealth of MP3 tracks to download. I have just discovered that i am into Downtempo and Electronic Folk! Blissed out smooth guitars and crisp synth lines blended with breakbeat love. Yum. Give it a try - there is loads of stuff there! All from bands you probably won't of heard of. But that's the fun of it all! I would post some links to the stuff i found - but that would spoil it for you! (and i can't remember!) Kinda makes me want to revamp The Music Club blog into something a little "more". Then again i am not so into Music that i could do a whole site based on it! Podcasting anyone?

The Pope Lives

Dearly beloved, The Roman Catholic Church appears to have elected a interweb friendly techno-pope (software release XVI) who has already started to Blog his way to heaven. See him preachin' and teachin' over at The Pope Lives. Amen.

Ow.. it hurts already

Just got back from my first Gym Session for 2 months (and 1 day). I already feel a little sore in the stomach area after doing 20 sit-ups of death. Its gonna be the kind of pain that throbs like a Jack Daniels enflamed ulcer. I hope that by the *real* summer i will have buns of steel and will look *buff* enough to remove my top in between the rain showers. I decided to ease slowly back into the routine and only ran 1.5 miles (in about 15 mins), 5 mins of cycling and a serious bash on the Multigym equipment. As of next week i will increase my running distance and perhaps even get out round the lake a few times as running on the treadmill is no real indication of how far you can run, just how long you can keep your legs moving. I was in there on my own for the whole time - which was nice. I had to endure the local radio station though which was as shite as usual. "Crap Hits from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and today!... but first... an advert for the local carpet showroom". If i had my 20gb iPod with me, some pumping trance would have made it all alot easier (i hope). But no doubt it would have shuffled onto something else and i would have been running to "Christmas in the stars" from the Star Wars Xmas Album. "What do you mean Artoo? reindeers can't fly!"

Had a lovelly day today. Went to pick up Son number 1 from his Nan's house as he elected to stay overnight with his cousin. His first night away from us. Not the first night we have been away from him though. It was a little odd for us taking the other son home and putting him to bed on his own. I had to put son number 1's radio on as if he was there... just to make number 2 son feel better. Or was it to make me feel better? After a quick lunch we headed off to meet all our local mates at the nearby Horsefair Green for cakes, football and wine. Lots of kids running all over the place and a little bit of wine to grease the wheels. Summers here at last! Posted by Hello

The first *real* pic of the new XBOX

As detailled over at Spong, this is a real pic of the new XBOX 360 console. Not white as i thought last week. The pic may also show the proposed "Add on hard disk" module. The console is rumored to come in 2 flavours, a standard console and one with a hard drive and WebTV capability. And with Wireless connectivity "out of the box" it might look quite nice under my TV. As long as i can buy a chipped one! Apparently Team Xecuter already have a reference model and are looking into the possibilities.

Who am i?

So who am i really? This is pretty near to the mark - in a multiple question psychoanalysis test sort of way... Extraversion = 40% Stability = 80% Orderliness = 46% Empathy = 76% Interdependence = 83% Intellectual = 63% Mystical = 70% Artistic = 83% Religious = 10% Hedonism = 50% Materialism = 56% Narcissism = 56% Adventurousness = 50% Work ethic = 76% Self absorbed = 43% Conflict seeking = 16% Need to dominate = 23% Romantic = 30% Avoidant = 30% Anti-authority = 43% Wealth = 50% Dependency = 50% Change averse = 50% Cautiousness = 43% Individuality = 36% Sexuality = 36% Peter pan complex = 70% Physical security = 76% Food indulgent = 16% Histrionic = 23% Paranoia = 30% Vanity = 43% Hypersensitivity = 43% Female cliche = 10%

Stability results were high which suggests you are very relaxed, calm, secure, and optimistic..

Orderliness results were medium which suggests you are moderately organized, hard working, and reliable while still remaining flexible, efficient, and fun.

Extraversion results were moderately low which suggests you are reclusive, quiet, unassertive, and secretive.

trait snapshot: rarely irritated, positive, tough, non phobic, fearless, likes the unknown, self reliant, high self control, confident, trusting, strong instincts, prudent, optimistic, willful, likes parties, prefers a specialized career, takes charge, altruistic, strong, high self concept, adventurous, practical, thoughtful.

So does the Peter Pan complex mean i don't want to grow up? Or just that i like to play with kids in their bedrooms and then take them away to far away places?

Doggy Style

Something for those of us that are bloggingly technically stunted and need a little extra schooling with HTML and CSS. Even Blog-gods like me need some help now and again and the HTML Dog site is pretty good. HTML 4 Beginners

They are taking the piss...

Just saw this over at the Wikipedia site and thought i had better grab a screenshot. Nice to find irony everywhere you look!

Total Body Meltdown Initiated....

Thursday afternon. Post lunch meltdown time. The shuttered eyelids, rushing feeling in my legs and the pulling sensation in my torso either means i have had too much (or not enough) coffee or that i have already expended all my*work energy* for the day. I watched most of "The Real Take That" on Channel5 last night after being trapped on the sofa after a large curry and more Cobra beer and although hating them with a vengance found the whole thing quite interesting. Apparently they were started as a group to tour the Gay clubs under the ownership of their gay manager. It was only after several years that they were groomed into the teenage girls wet dream material we know them for best. In a way i feel quite sorry for them. They were totally controlled from day 1 which eventually ended in them splitting up after the divisions between Robbie and Gary Barlow over who would sing lead vocals on the tracks came to a head. They made millions of pounds - of which most have seen very little i expect, toured the world as total superstars and done many amazing things. If you think of it as something like an amusement ride then it would have been fun to have been there at the top of the rollercoaster only to teeter on the edge before plummeting down. Not sure i could have handled doing all that dancing though...

Lets hope that this is not some sort of pre Revenge Of The Sith viral marketing, but the Darth Vader blog has appeared over at The Darth Side: Memoirs of a Monster. So. Vader does have a sense of humour after all. Nice. [via]

Black and white photography

I have always been a fan of B&W photographs. They always look much more dramatic and the lack of color allows the view to concentrate more on the content. I found this tutorial ages ago but never really played with it too much. It works very well and produces a good quality B&W image with good depth of shadow and highlights. Manchester-Monkey-Torrent-Tastic

When i came home and dropped into my Blogline subscriptions i was gifted with the news i have been waiting a few weeks for: Slyck News - Partial Oasis Album Spreads Through BitTorrent. It did'nt take me long to find it and download it and i can confirm that although the audio quality of the 5 tracks is pretty poor - it is the real thing! The last few Oasis albums have been far too over produced and many of the songs have been pretty forgetable so i hope that the new album will make right the mistakes they made. First impressions? Not bad. The first track "Mucky Fingers" sounds like a Lou Reed classic he wrote about waiting his man. Track 2, "Meaning of soul" sounds like Jumping Jack Flash by the Stones but track 4 (skipping Track 3 - "Lyla" which i love already) "keeping the dream alive" is a slower floating melodic tune peppered with the rusty Liam vocals we know (and love). Sounds a little but like the Beatles when they went "all Indian" on us. A sitar popping up in the final audio mix would not surprise me. The final track in the torrent is "Let there be love". This promises to be my fave as it is an acoustic guitar track with minimal piano overlayed. You expect this to have the usual squeezed vocals by Noel but Liam sings the majority of this track aswell as Noel and manages to pull it off very well. Its got nice minor chord changes in there and sounds alot like some more recent Beatles tracks and their other slow Oasis ballads like "Don't look back in anger" and "Cast no shadow". When i saw Oasis on the TV doing their live performance at Glastonbury i feared that the end was nigh. Liam sounded awful. I almost mistook it for Vic Reeves doing his Pub Singer impression on Shooting Stars! Thank god he managed to sober up enough in time to record the album. It totally put me off buying tickets for their gig at the Milton Keynes Bowl later this year. Maybe i was too hasty. Until Noel produces his solo album and collaborates on tracks with the likes of Paul Weller I will have to make do with these new songs. The album is officially released on May 16th and will be called "Don't Believe the Truth".

So, you hate my blog huh?

Bored of reading about my lack of an iPod? Miffed at my dislike of Dr Who? Here is some light relief... [via]

New Header Image and tempate updates

In a quick follow up to the posting below, i found how to add the random Flickr images to make the word TAOSKI in the header image of my blog using the Spell with Flickr code! You just copy the code given on his site! Duh..Nice-n-easy.

Mr Chuffed!

I thought i would make a posting as i am feeling all chuffed after solving something in Blogger that i have wanted to do for a while now. And it only took me an hour! On my sister blog - The Music Club - which i share with 5 other friends I wanted to put the picture from the blogger profile against each posting the individual members make. I got this idea from the Blogger comments pages that were changed earlier this year to show the comenters profile pic to the left of the text. Unfortunately there is no <$BlogItemAuthorProfileImageURL$> tag available to insert into the template (yet) so i had to create the code myself. Here's the science bit: So basically what this little bit of code does is store the value of the BlogItemAuthorNickname tag into a variable called bloggername. Then a series of IF statements decides which person made the post and writes HTML into the page using the document.write statement with the picture from their profile and also a link to said profile. If you want the code then just email me or leave a comment and i will forward it on, or you can grab it from the source code of the Music Blog site. It's all very basic stuff and is not dynamic, meaning that i will have to put new members in there if and when they join - but it's a start. Not bad for someone who has never done Javascript before and has not done any *real* code for about 8 years! The next task is to generate a dynamic header image from the Spell With Flickr code. Another late night ahead! Thank god for Google, the holy Coffee and the virginal VoyeurWeb that keeps me awake during these trying times.

Dr Who.... gives a feck.

Watched the 3rd and 4th episode of the new BBC1 Dr Who Series last night and it still left me feeling rather let down. It was all very entertaining but The Doctor (played by Chris Eccleston on E) is far too "happy cheeky chappie" for my liking. Not too many silly jokes this episode though and there were parts that could really be described as "Contains Mild Peril". And now they have announced that after Mr Eccleston has totally ditched the show after this first series and taken the upper-lip with the whole silly affair - they have cast another wet looking british fop in the role for the next series! Downhill from here then....

2 fingers and thumbs keep moving...

After a long slow week at work i crashed on the sofa and watched Doves perform (live) on the Jonathan Ross show. The fact that the lead singer can sing and play Bass guitar at the same time left me remembering how hard i find it to play normal guitar and sing. I can manage to whistle but i cannot seem to flow any words along with the music at all. Even when others are talking to me whilst i am playing I have to fit my replies in between chord changes. I have been playing for about 18 years and still have the same guitar. Does'nt make me any good though. I'm not bad and can string a tune together - as long as it's Oasis.

Arthur Dent? In MK?

Just been up to the local City Center to post my eBay stuff to the nice people who wanted to buy it. There is a promotional display for HHGTTG outside FatDonalds with some poor sods (students) dressed as Ford Prefect and Arthur Dent - complete with dressing gown! You were also able to sit in a special "Ocular" and watch the trailers for the film. They looked well pissed off! Especially as both times i walked past they were assisting some grannies who were holding up a map of the shopping center and were wondering the best route to take to the Shopping Mobility area to rent their Turbo-Zimmers. Would you do anything for money?

See.... told ya!

In true Taoski prediction stylie.. follow this link: Xbox 360 to come in white? Also, some extra info via XboxScene:
The machine has a concave design, can stand upright and hollows in at the middle, like it's "sucking in its cheeks," our source told us today. Previous rumours had put the console as silver, although fresh information says the final design may be white. It's impossible to tell from the documents. According to the source, the rumoured slot for the hard drive - which was apparently at the top of the machine - is not obvious on the document, and the person was unable to clarify where the slot for discs actually appeared.
I'm off to do the lottery. No mention of the "floating" buttons on my reference design though..

Mac Mini Madness

Went and saw the Mac Mini this lunchtime at the local Selfridges in Birmingham. As the reviews say, it is very small! It looks a little like a stainless steel biscuit tin. Hmm.. I feel a DIY project coming on. On one of their other iMacs was over 41,000 tracks in iTunes and an AVI DIvX rip of the Incredibles! Real clever guys! Good way to loose your job. They all deserve to be locked up anyway... for password protecting all the PCs screensavers so you can't fiddle with them!

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy film review

To summarise: Bad, awful, rubbish and crap. Go and read it here: Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy review. I can't understand why they let people do this to films. Some poor sod who has never read the books will watch this and think its pants and dismiss the original works completely. At least the LOTR films were passable as adhering to the story (just about). And why did they make Ford Prefect black? Probably just to appeal to the american youth who they think are so narrow minded that they will associate with an "icon" and got to see the film. I did'nt know Mos Def was so popular anyway. Maybe 20cent, Eminem or Snoop should have also been considered. Next we will be getting another bastardised version of another Sci-fi classic starring a black rap star come actor. Oh no.. they beat me to it.

GTD

How to Get Things Done: Method 1: Read this article and digest. Buy and read the book and digest. Create action plan. Review action plan. Categorise "stuff". Move to your inbox and evaluate the workflow outcome process. Repeat. Method 2: Read article. Check your Gmail account. Read blogs. Do a bit of work. Swear laughingly at colleagues. Burp. Pretend to do more work. Toss off until time to leave the office. Method 3: Don't read article. Procrastinate. Just BE...... Job done. Nice ideas. Too much hassle. Carry on regardless. Insert head up arse. Nice in here.

Strong coffee please! I'm going down....

Feeling tired and apathetic today. I can't even blog straight. This is the 4th time i have tried - i deleted all the others as they were sounding too morose. I was up until 2am Monday morning trying to re-flash the firmware on my old Wireless Access Point i have for sale on eBay at the moment after i thought i had screwed it up for good. Staying up til 2am is not the problem though. When i did eventually fix the fault and reitre to my bed my brain was still in work mode and was buzzing away for at least 1 hour. My little'n got up the following day at 0640 which in total made for about 4 hours sleep. I am pretty good at surviving on no sleep though. Its always the second day after when it hits me the most. Have more coffee, leave the desk and walk round outside in the fresh air? Nah, i'll just stew at my desk and wade through the blogs i have on my Bloglines Subscriptions. That usually has some interesting stuff about new mobile phones or the XBOX360/PSP to keep me awake. Slot in a bit of work too here and there and all should be ok. Only joking Mr Employer - i am working all the time - just in case you really are monitoring my connection! The problem is.... i'm here at work til six tonight. I wonder if my brain will still be working then? Doubt it.

XBOX 360 gets all "iPodded up"!

Just seen this sneaky preview of the alledged new controller of the Xbox 360 over at engadget. I guess it was only time before M$ jumped on the apple gloss white bandwagon and then release an old patent from back in the 80s to coin in more cash from the unsuspecting Steve Jobs. I expect the xbox itself will be a white box - dvd player size with rounded edges and corners with a neat litle green X cut into the top. You'll see! Remember where you read it first! Invite

The splendid northerners over at New Links have invited me to join their site! This comes as a total surprise to me! I thought only my work colleagues were reading this blog - but obviously i was wrong! I am in 2 minds wether to join though. I quite like having my own space and fiddling with all the template settings n-that but getting more exposure could be a good thing. Thoughts anyone? Maybe taoski.blogspot.com will become more of a personal blog - or just a dumping ground for my fractal images? Check out newlinks too. They are all great guys and the Newlinks blog on Blogger was one of the first i checked daily.

New Oasis Track - Lyla

I managed to purloin the new Oasis track from the torrents yesterday only to then get the full video on Channel4 at about 11pm! Cool. The new song - Lyla - is what you would expect from the more recent Oasis stuff, well over produced with the usual sandpaper vocals from Liam. I am not overly impressed - but have only heard the track 2 time so far but have been singing it in my head for the last 4 hours! I have it here on my portable drive so will give it a few more listens before the day is out. The track listing for the new album AND comments on each track by acoustic superman Noel is as follows [via]:
1. ‘Turn Up The Sun’ - “A bit like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, A stomper” 2. ‘Mucky Fingers’ – Imagine Bob Dylan singing [The Velvet Underground’s] ‘Waiting For The Man’ with that frantic drumbeat. 3. ‘Lyla’ – Our poppiest thing since ‘Roll With It’ Annoyingly catchy. A bit like The Who.” 4. ‘Love Like A Bomb’ – ‘One of Liam’s. It starts off acoustic and Martin Duffy of Primal Scream plays this kinda country piano solo.” 5. ‘The Importance Of Being Idle’ – “A cross between The Kinks and The La’s about being a lazy f**ker.” 6. ‘The Meaning Of Soul’ – “Like Elvis on crack. We played it at Glastonbury like The Stooges.” 7. ‘Guess God Thinks I’m Abel’ – A Liam tune that’s kind of slowish and acoustic.” 8. ‘Part Of The Queue’ – One of mine with a weird 3/4 rhythm that’s a bit Shack [brilliant mid ‘90s smack-blighted, hugely melodic Liverpudlian nearly-rans] doing Love” 9. ‘Keep The Dream Alive’ – “A song by Andy [Bell – bassist] that’s like The Stone Roses.” 10. ‘A Bell Will Ring’ – Gem [Archer – guitarist] wrote it. It’s the closest anyone’s got to sounding like [The Beatles’] ‘Revolver’.” 11. 'Let There Be Love' – “We [Noel and Liam] both sing, like the self-Righteous Brothers. It’s a fitting anthem to finish the record.” ‘Don’t Believe the Truth’ will be released on May 30 and the first single 'Lyla’ will out on May 16. Both will be released on Gallagher’s own Big Brother Recordings label.
I wonder how long it will be before an ADVANCE version appears on the torrents? Anyway, i'm sure you can find an MP3 of Lyla if you know where to look.

The New Taoski Blog?

I am getting more and more annoyed with Blogger failing to update properly and being really slow so i have been looking for a new Blog provider. Most seem to want to charge you for the good stuff - but i stumbed upon ModBlog this afternoon and created an account there. It seems very quick (compared to Blogger) and has many more features built in (unlike Blogger). Check it out at ModBlog - Taoski. I will play with it and see what i can do. Ooops! Its after 6pm! Time to be off!

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As you ALL know by now, the Pope died at the weekend. Now, I am not a religious person at all and have no real interest in being or becoming religious at all - but it has shown my wife and I how ignorant we are of religion in general! Obviously there are lots (probably hundreds) of types of religions in the world but I am not even aware of the differences between the largest ones. So, in true internet stylie, off I trot on the merry path to (enlightenment?) knowledge. I started at the Wiki... and stopped! Blimey. Its all very confusing as to why Catholics are different from Protestants (because of the reforms made in the 16th century) and why Othodox is different from the Church Of England (CofE ruled by the queen and government). They all basically stem from the same theories and teachings but have chosen slightly different paths by the looks of it. Nevertheless - I have the utmost respect for people who can *believe* in something with real unbreakable and unquestioning passion. Something that I would not be able to do I think. If I were to adopt a religion then maybe something like Buddhism or Taoism appeals. Mainly as they are more about self than sacrifice and and denial. I have probably got this all wrong... feel free to flame me. I would like to have a nice concise description of Christianity's facets. Maybe someone invented a rhyming poem or something to help people remember. Or a rap? Yeah.. That would be better.

The evidence..... Posted by Hello I had a dream last night. I was walking back from MK train station to where i used to park my car during my "commuting phase". The wind was blowing hard and i could feel my hair getting pushed up as i turned my face into the wind. But that was just a dream. Yes. It's gone. My hair has bit the floor in a blaze of clipper madness last night. Actually - while i was doing it my wife started saying "but i like your hair long" and also her mother who was on the phone at the time said the same! Tsk! Actually, i feel a little sad for doing it now. I was kind of postponing cutting it off until everyone had seen it in its full glory. Most people never did though. Also i am not the kind of person who showers every day and when it is just washed it goes mad! Therefore i spent most of the time looking like i was electrocuted or something. I have come into work today i have had quite a few of the usual comments like "who did your hair? The council?" or "Let me know who it was... i'll go and get them for you". Do they not remember that i have had my hair shaved like this ever since i have worked at this office and also for the last 16 years! How quickly they forget.. My hair was about 4 inches long and 20 inches deep. Looking at my profile picture (top right of the screen) - that was the last time i was shaven. Those pics were taken on the 13th of September last year. So it was only growing for six months. Not bad. With a little more "management" i might even get long flowing locks next time! Watch this space....
